Our first meeting of 2013 will be on January 25th. A Friday.
We will be reading Gate at the Stairs, by Lorrie Moore. There are 5 CD's and 20 books currently available from the Contra Costa Library. Lorrie Moore has been described as writing with "poetic precision of language." Gate at the Stairs is a sort of female coming-of-age story. It is Lorrie Moore's third novel.
Lisa is scheduled to bring food for our January meeting, Rachel will bring book selections and Brooke will lead our discussion.

November 30th meeting
Remember -- our next meeting is after Thanksgiving! We will be meeting on November 30th, 2012.
Tonight we selected All Creatures Great and Small, by James Herriot as our five-week read. This is the story of a young country veterinarian. We haven't read a biography in a while, so this should be fun. Also, we thought it would be a respite from the more serious, and let me just come out and say it--disturbing-- books we might have read lately.
."Warm, joyous, often hilarious... shines with love of life." -- The New York Times Book Review
So have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy this book.
At our next meeting, Brooke will bring food, Denise will bring the book choices, and Donna will facilitate our discussion of the book.
Hope to see you all there!

July 27th meeting
We had a lively conversation on our book: The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.
Sherrie provided the book selections for our next meeting on July 27.
The group chose: Pigs in Heaven, by Barbara Kingsolver. Remember Turtle, from The Bean Trees? This is another book about her. This book was on the New York Times Bestseller list for 18 weeks! (Not necessarily an indication of a good book, but worth noting...) And here is a brief description:
Six-year-old Turtle Greer witnesses a freak accident at the Hoover Dam, leading to a man's dramatic rescue. But Turtle's moment of celebrity draws her into a crisis of historical proportions that will envelop not only her and her mother, Taylor, but everyone else who touched their lives in a complex web connecting their future with their past.
July 27th meeting duties:
Facilitatress: SherrieHostess: FranNext Selection: Sheila
Also: Please remember to call one of us if you aren't going to make the meeting. There were a couple of folks absent this past week and we missed you.
- We worry about you, if we don't hear from you.
- We also delay the meeting start waiting for you. Which I'm sure you'll agree is inconsiderate of the folks who are here at 7:00 and those who work the next day.
- The calendar is tricky when the first Friday falls on a short first week.as it did this month.
This is the BEST book group ever. We have formed friendships and bonds through
the stories we share. So -- see you on the 27th !!

We are reading All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Marie Remarche. I offer you a summary from Wikipedia:
All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues) is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I. The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front.
The novel was first published in November and December 1928 in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung and in book form in late January 1929. The book and its sequel, The Road Back, were among the books banned and burned in Nazi Germany. It sold 2.5 million copies in twenty-five languages in its first eighteen months in print.[1]
In 1930, the book was adapted as an Oscar-winning film of the same name, directed by Lewis Milestone. The schedule is up-to-date, and our assignments for May are as follows:

March 2012 Meeting
We have selected Three Junes, by Julia Glass, for our March 2012 book. Three Junes was published in 2002, and was Julia Glass's first book. The Library Journal review begins with this:
This strong and memorable debut novel draws the reader deeply into the lives of several central characters during three separate Junes spanning ten years. We will meet on Friday, March 23rd, same bat time, same bat place.
Rachel will be hostess
Brooke will bring book selections
Denise will facilitate our discussion.
Please try to let another member know if you do not plan to attend the meeting. As you know, we try to wait for everyone to show up before we start.
(For the record, Sheila will not be attending the March meeting)

February 2012 meeting
In February, we will be reading March, by Geraldine Brooks. This was at least the second time that Donna had presented this book as a choice, so we chose it. It is the story of Mr. March, the father who was away from home during Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. Geraldine Brooks was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for this book in 2006. Also note that G Brooks wrote People of the Book, which we read in 2009.
Fran says there is extra credit for reading Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott...
Our meeting will be on Friday, February 24th, 2012.
Brooke will be our hostess.
Denise will bring book selections.
Donna will lead the discussion.
Lisa will be out-of-town for the next three meetings, returning in May. Alas, she will miss the 12th anniversary celebration in April.
I will have a preliminary calendar ready for review in the new couple of weeks.
